The year 2018 was full of significant events that shaped the world in various ways. Here are some of the key events that happened in 2018:

  • January: A false missile alert caused panic in Hawaii, the #MeToo movement gained momentum with the Golden Globe Awards and the trial of Larry Nassar, and SpaceX launched the Falcon Heavy rocket with a Tesla Roadster on board.



  • February: The Winter Olympics were held in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where Norway won the most medals, and North Korea participated in a rare show of diplomacy. A mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, sparked a nationwide movement for gun control led by students.



  • March: A nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy and his daughter in Salisbury, UK, triggered a diplomatic crisis between Russia and the West. China abolished presidential term limits, allowing Xi Jinping to rule indefinitely. Stephen Hawking, the renowned physicist and cosmologist, died at age 76.



  • April: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress about the Cambridge Analytica scandal, which exposed the misuse of personal data of millions of users. Kim Jong-un became the first North Korean leader to cross the border into South Korea for a historic summit with Moon Jae-in.



  • May: The US withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, reimposing sanctions on Tehran. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle got married in a lavish ceremony at Windsor Castle. A volcanic eruption in Hawaii destroyed hundreds of homes and forced thousands to evacuate.



  • June: The US and North Korea held a historic summit in Singapore, where Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un signed a vague agreement on denuclearization. The FIFA World Cup kicked off in Russia, where France emerged as the champion. Saudi Arabia lifted its ban on women driving.



  • July: Twelve boys and their soccer coach were rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand after a dramatic operation that captivated the world. A trade war escalated between the US and China, as both sides imposed tariffs on billions of dollars worth of goods. A heat wave swept across Europe, breaking temperature records and causing wildfires.



  • August: Apple became the first US company to reach a market value of $1 trillion. A bridge collapsed in Genoa, Italy, killing 43 people. Senator John McCain, a war hero and a prominent figure in American politics, died at age 81.



  • September: A powerful earthquake and tsunami hit Indonesia, killing more than 2,000 people and displacing millions. The US Senate confirmed Brett Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court justice after a contentious confirmation process that involved allegations of sexual assault. Elon Musk was sued by the SEC for fraud over his tweet about taking Tesla private.



  • October: Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and critic of the regime, was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, sparking an international outcry. Canada legalized recreational marijuana, becoming the second country in the world to do so. A far-right candidate, Jair Bolsonaro, won the presidential election in Brazil.



  • November: The US midterm elections resulted in a divided Congress, as Democrats took control of the House and Republicans retained the Senate. A massive wildfire in California killed 85 people and destroyed thousands of structures. Stan Lee, the legendary comic book writer and creator of Marvel superheroes, died at age 95.



  • December: France was rocked by violent protests by the "yellow vests" movement over rising fuel prices and economic inequality. The UK Parliament postponed a vote on Theresa May's Brexit deal, plunging the country into uncertainty over its future relationship with the EU. NASA's InSight lander successfully touched down on Mars.
